Day 7
This day was a bit different than the others. Because of a change I had to do in schedules due to my thesis project at the university, I couldn't attend the class I usually have with the preteens. For this reason, I had to accompany teacher Nidia in a class she has prior to the kids. This class is online and also with kids, and so I had the chance to observe this one. These kids are on the same path as the class with my usual kids. By observing this class I realised how difficult it is to do an online class with little kids; even though my team teacher was doing a great job in my opinion, sometimes the kids were inevitably distracted or, in some cases, lost. Because it was my first and last time with this group, I didn't prepare the warm up nor the assessment, but I did monitor and help the kids in their mini groups when they had to practice conversations. It was a new and challenging experience. We then had class with my usual kids. I feel like I'm getting to know them better and they seem to be rather fond of me; I like to greet them and make informal convestation to build rapport, this so the class doesn't feel flat and straight to the point, I planned a warm up that consisted of a guessing game and they did it very well, I was happy of the outcome. Now, as for the assessment cycle, I handed them pieces of paper in which they had to colour a face that represented how well they understood the topic and then, based on their asnwer, create a sentence example. This part felt more complex in terms of instructions. I feel like I did a good job explaining the activity but still, while they were doing it, I had to repeat myself to certain students that were confused. I'll try to improve this for future classes, but I think that overall it was good and they turned out to be useful sessions for both kids groups.
Alejandra, I’m glad you had the opportunity to observe Nidia in her virtual class, since this was a new experience for you. As you mentioned, teaching online presents many challenges, but it also gives us the chance to understand how these classes work and how we can adapt our teaching styles to meet students’ needs in a virtual setting. I know you previously had a session with supervisors Catherine Torres and Andrés Ramírez about online teaching strategies, so be sure to keep their tips in mind and apply them whenever you have the chance to lead an online class. This will not be your only experience because sooner or later you will be teaching online yourself, and it’s important to start preparing for that now.
